Wow, me too. It's really hard to describe what that meant to someone that didn't live through it. There was so much more than sports going on and yet it all came down to that game. I actually thought the movie, while fluffy, captured it better than I imagined it could but nothing short of living those moments could help you really understand it.

I can still easily rattle off the names from the top of my head- Craig, Morrow, Silk, Eruzione, Johnson, Broten, Christian, Schneider, Pavelich, O'Callahan, and of course Herb Brooks
So many Americans think that we won the gold medal by winning that game, they don't realize that we still had to play Finland two days later
rare SI cover with zero text

I remember hosting my birthday party in our basement and my dad kept running upstairs to see updates of the game. The US won the gold on my actual birthday two days later
And I knew when I woke up Rock N Roll would be here forever

Missed that moment live because my high school's basketball team was in a state sectional final, and going to that sounded like more fun than watching TV. Of course, they lost.
Now it's dark.

Awesome! Unfortunately, I am a tad to young to remember this but it is still one of the best sports moments of all time. This also is probably the last time Basket...er, uh I mean Sports Illustrated had ice hockey on their cover, other than maybe a Great One appearance ( I do know of one - 1988: The Trade)

The Blackhawks made the cover at least once in 2015 as I have a copy here. I'm thinking they may have been on for their first one too.211poundsofpork wrote:Awesome! Happened 6 months before I was born, therefore not relevant to me.

Re: 37 years ago today
Seriously. I was born in 1961 and WWII and the rise of the Nazis and the Axis powers and their subsequent defeat have felt relevant to me all my life. In the sports world I guess the analogy would be the 1936 Olympics and the triumph of Jesse Owens which happened 25 years before I was born but still seems relevant today. Miracle on Ice was 5 years before I was born, but I still get chills watching those clips.

I was born twenty-some years before you were. It didn't really matter to me, either.Duke Silver wrote:Happened 6 months before I was born, therefore not relevant to me.

Could those be regional variants? SI does several of those every year.Iowan wrote:I found 4 hockey covers in 2013 alone.

Re: 37 years ago today
I don't think so. I went to a blog that has every SI cover over a certain period of time.Flea wrote:Could those be regional variants? SI does several of those every year.Iowan wrote:I found 4 hockey covers in 2013 alone.
