This isn't meant to replace the What's Everyone Listening To or New Album Releases threads but rather to supplement them. I know lots of us turn to those threads in search of new music but this thread can also serve as a place to post stuff that's currently tripping our musical triggers.

After being enamored of That '59 Sound, I pretty much sat out the follow up to that album (American Slang). I'm not sure why I did that but it sounds like the Gaslight Anthem is back in full force with their latest effort, Handwritten, which is due for release on July 24th. This is the first single from it, "45".

I liked American Slang a lot more than '59 Sound.

I think "'45" is great, and am very excited about the new album.

'59 Sound has some emo-ish leanings that I don't really like. American Slang really widened their sound and showed more of the E Street influence that I heard so much about, but didn't really hear in '59 Sound.

The two recent pickups I can't get out of my rotation are the new Mark Lanegan, "Blues Funeral" and the new Kelly Hogan, "I Like To Keep Myself In Pain." Those w/ Zevon and and "El Camino" are about all I've listened to in the last month.

That Charles Bradley is excellent.

And I heard a Father John Misty live performance on KEXP recently, and really enjoyed it. I've been thinking about picking that up too.

I know next to nothing about this band but I'm glad I asked who they were when the clerk at Schoolkids Records put their album on after Drivin' n' Cryin's in-store there yesterday afternoon. If you like what you hear below there are more clips on their Tumblr page.

I heard Lower Dens for the first time yesterday and I liked it a lot.

Totally into this Boston band, Ghosts of Jupiter these days. There new self-titled disc (well, latest - it came out last November) has me listening to it non-stop. I've read about them online as well as in some mags before but have not bothered to check them out until now. Think 60's - 70's metal steeped in psychedelia. Cream, Zep, Hendrix and especially Sabbath come to mind when I hear them. The chunky riffs will floor you. (Their sound reminds me a bit of obscure 90's band, Kyuss and what they were about as well.) Definitely check these guys out. Their sound is a nice kick in the ass. You will not regret it.

I bought the debut album by these guys way back in 2000 but for whatever reason I never really paid them much attention after that. Perhaps because they only released one other album (as well as an EP) after that. This cut is from their new record, Tarnished Gold, which came out in late June.

These guys played Hopscotch last year. I somehow managed to miss them then but did catch them several months later when they played the Local Beer/Local Band series at Tir na nOg in Raleigh. Hope to see them back in town again soon.

This is the latest entry in the Independent Weekly's ongoing Simple Music series. I've mentioned Ryan Gustafson here before but he's taken a hiatus from performing over the past year or so. Lately, he's started to perform again and is presently working on a new album. This song, "The Harbor", is listed here as "unreleased" but hopefully it'll be on his next record. If you like what you hear here, he has one album out called The Donkey LP, which I very highly recommend. When I first moved to Raleigh in 2008, Ryan was part of something called the Drug Horse collective that was going pretty strong at that point. It's kind of died out over the past couple of years but everyone that was involved with it has been concentrating more on their own projects since it's demise. Lots of great work has come out of it, including Mount Moriah and several other bands. I'm looking very forward to Ryan's next record. When I heard his debut I just couldn't get enough of it so I'm pretty excited to see what he has up his sleeve for his follow up album.

I don't think I've ever seen Mic Harrison mentioned here. He was once a member of the V Roys as well as SuperDrag. A few years ago he joined forces with a band called the High Score. This is from their latest album Still Wanna Fight that came out earlier this year.

Has John Fullbright been mentioned here yet? A friend brought him to my attention a month or so ago on the old Guitartown email list but I haven't really looked into his music too much from there. Just heard this on the Outlaw Country channel on XM and was reminded of how much I like it (again).

Mikal Cronin....been totally digging this guy. love his lo-fi pop stuff w/ the occasional psych freakout
