Going to check out the Deadstring Brothers later today. 'Scratch likened them to the Stones, which usually sits well with me.
That Cash set box set sounds like a good listen. I loved the first 4 American Series albums, and while the last couple got a little thin, there were still gems in all of those sets.

You won't have to listen too closely to hear the likeness.

Lots of songs with TP & the Heartbreakers as the "backing band" as well.
And I knew when I woke up Rock N Roll would be here forever

Excellent.

That was definitely one of the things I loved about the American Series. I was first listening to American III and hadn't done any research, and kept thinking to myself "that sounds like Petty on those background vocals".

Yeah, pushing it past IV was pushing it a bit too far. The original one, to me, is head & shoulders above the rest. I stumbled across a pretty cool collection of stuff years ago called American Recordings 4 1/2. It's got stuff he recorded during the period that never made the official American releases or the Unearthed box set.
I'm on Fire
The Road to Kaintucky
A Satisfied Mind
I Dreamed About Mama Last Night
Tears in the Holston River
Hold Fast to the Right
Unclouded Day
Wayworn Traveller
Temptation
Engine
For You
Far Side Banks of the Jordan
September When It Comes
Meet Me in Heaven
If interested, PM me and I can bundle it up & send your way.

Just a couple songs in. The chief influence is apparent, but this is enjoyable as hell.

I think the Stone influence is a lot less this time out, but it's a different band entirely. This is mostly Nashville session cats. On the road, at least temporarily, John Neff is on pedal steel. I dig this record but not as much as some of their earlier ones.

Even Stonesier. Still fun.

Starving Winter Report! That's the one I couldn't remember the name of. Looks like I'll have to check out the new one too.

Re: What's Everyone Listening to?
This is for me. I tend to enjoy bands that have very obvious classic influences to a significant extent, assuming the classic influence is one I enjoy and the songs are solid. Time will tell if they end up in the American Aquarium (fun as hell, but don't love them) bin or the Hold Steady (borderline all-time favorite band) bin.
I think the songs are better than American Aquarium, but they aren't as unique as THS.
Re: What's Everyone Listening to?
Wow, this is a pleasant surprise. Lovin MMJ on "Long as I Can See the Light", "Who'll Stop the Rain" w/Bog Seger, "Someday Never Comes" w/Dawes, & "Proud Mary" w/Jennifer Hudson, Allen Touissant & Rebirth Brass Band.
Of course there's no redeeming what the Zac Brown Band did to "Bad Moon Rising" or what Kid Rock did to "Born on the Bayou".
E quindi uscimmo a riveder le stelle.

I love it but was really disappointed as they seem to have butchered the gaps between the songs and the little sung intros all seem to have been taken out (unless Stipe had stopped singing them by this time). Real shame.

Agreed. I'm not sure why they were allowed to include those snippets in Tourfilm but they've been deleted here. I don't know what all the legal ins and outs are but during my radio days I know that we were allowed to use portions of commercially released songs in commercials just so long as they didn't exceed a certain length. Stipe only sang a line or two from them here so I'm not sure what the deal is. Coupled with the Live In Greensboro EP that came out on Record Store Day this is supposed to amount to the full length concert but that actually isn't the case as "Harpers" (Hugo Largo), "Dark Globe" (Syd Barrett) and "After Hours" have all been cut. I can't really figure that out either as they'd previously released "After Hours" on one of the "Losing My Religion" singles back in the early 90's. They also released a studio version of "Dark Globe" (which originally appeared as a flexi-disc in Sassy magazine) as a b-side to one of the "Everybody Hurts" single. Again, I don't know the reasoning behind this. For whatever it's worth, the songs from the Live In Greensboro EP are included in the iTunes download for the Green 25th anniversary album. Sort of a fuck you to those of us who got up at the crack of dawn on Record Store Day to buy the EP. Mills said in a recent interview with Rolling Stone that they may at some point start a live archive series. I think that's wonderful but all of the concerts that have been included with the 25th anniversary reissues of Murmur, Reckoning, Document and Green have all been heavily edited with most (if not all) of them being covers. The only ones that have made it through are "Femme Fatale" (which they released as a studio version on a b-side) and "Strange" (Wire). On the concert from the 25th anniversary of Document they even edited out "Red Rain" (Peter Gabriel) and "Time After Time" from a medley that included "So. Central Rain (I'm Sorry)". The only thing left intact was "So. Central Rain (I'm Sorry)". I found that odd considering that the medley had previously been released as a b-side to the 12" for "The One I Love" and later appeared on In the Attic – Alternative Recordings 1985–1989.

My old friend Paula cut a new album (as Paula Frazer and Tarnation) and has some of the music on Facebook. I'm enjoying it a lot.
