Jerry Joseph & the Stiff Boys
Xpost from FB:
I've started typing up about ten different posts about Jerry Joseph and the Stiff Boys' Saturday set and I just haven't been able to find the words to articulate not just how absolutely captivating I was by Jerry's stage presence or even how extraordinarily blown away I was by the time it was over, but to express how interesting to look around and gauge the reactions of other heathens as most of us experienced those songs for the first time; there was a lot to process, to say the least. And goddamn are those songs something else. While they all sounded great, especially Days of Heaven and San Acacia, the two that had the biggest effect on me were "Sugar Smacks" and *surprise* "Dead Confederate". Both were very provocative, even (especially?) to a DBT crowd; the latter is really fucking brave at this point and time because as obvious as the point is to anyone who actually listens to it; well, anyone who finds fucking slavery appalling will get it, (which may be less of a consensus than we think ffs) but it's ripe for misinterpretation from a lot of differeby angles; it's like Jerry told "the southern thing" to hold his beer. Such a brilliant, powerful thought-provoking song that's impossible for me to sing along with. I should also point out that while it kicks ass on live recordings with the Jackmormons backing him up, having DB...er the Stiff Boys, a gang of the some of the most outspoken, influential southern men in rock n roll, backing him up takes it to another level. Context, heathens.
And then there was "Sugar Smacks". Every bit as thought-provoking and provocative as "Dead Confederate" but instead of a mournful march through a graveyard it's a pissed-off strut through a dark alley. It's not really confused, maybe a good bit overwhelmed though; it's got the thread it's just too big to figure how exactly where it runs. No easy answers here either, which seems to be a theme in Joseph's work.
But there ya go. Don't think I hit the mark exactly as I wanted but maybe you get the idea.
"Dead Confederate"
Alabama, Alabama
Heat lightning from the Nick
And all's I see is project housing
Chicken bones and broken bricks
Standing, I been standing
the better part of 80 years
With my Jim Crow benediction
Ropes and hoods and local cheers
Fighting, we were fighting
And our namesake killed for southern gods
Dying, we were dying
Lucifer's divining rite
Selling, we were selling
The bodies of black boys and girls
Yelling, we were yelling
Rebel yell heard 'round the world
Hey now baby I'm a dead confederate
80 years I stood my ground
I ain't sorry and I ain't regretting it
Now they're trying to tear me down
Hey now baby I'm a dead confederate
Rebel pride, a heart of stone
I ain't worried and I ain't sweating it
Wish they'd just leave me alone
Snowflakes, August snowflakes
Falling here in Birmingham
And I never claimed to think too deep
Never said I understand
Swallowing my granite pride
They haul me out to gravel pits
They forget that I lived and died,
Smashed me up to chips and bits
Buying and selling humans was good work
If you could get it
Well the South could build great pyramids
And rise up if you let it
But they shine their light of righteousness
Upon my unclean darkest deeds
Pulling up my withered roots
Poisoning my righteous seed
Jesus was a white man
and he promised we could rule
So we burn his holy cross in honor
Hang the negro and the fool
Baby I'm gon' rise again
Out on highway 29
In the meantime I'll rejoin the earth
And bide the wicked sands of time
Hey now baby I'm a dead confederate
80 years I stood my ground
I ain't sorry and I ain't regretting it
Now they're trying to tear me down

So Dead Confederate is told from the POV of an old civil war confederate statue that's about to be torn down. I think his intro to the song last weekend was very similar. Excellent work there Gordon, thanks.gordonlw wrote:while y'all wait for the Stiff Boys set check out this one from a show I taped in 2018! go to about the 7 minute mark of the track before for the intro/story to the song.

Re: Jerry Joseph & the Stiff Boys
I’m at work, and haven’t been able to listen to Gordon’s posted show yet, but Clams’s interpretation is analogous to my thinking, but I hadn’t been brave enough to share my hypothesis yet. I can see the song being sung by a statue (just realized how that sounds—no psychedelics this week) or being sung by the soul of the soldier whom the statue is commemorating.Clams wrote:gordonlw wrote:So Dead Confederate is told from the POV of an old civil war confederate statue that's about to be torn down. I think the statue/soldier is relaying how the things for which he proudly fought 150 years prior, while still meaningful to him, have little relevance today. I can’t wait to hear how the rest of you dissect the song. The song could very easily be misinterpreted as pro-statues (“hey ‘southern thing’ hold my beer”).
This song is a dissertation in waiting and was a total highlight of the weekend for me.
Thanks again for posting the lyrics for the Facebook impaired!

Oh the confederate statue POV isn't my interpretation - it comes right out JJ's mouth in the song intro in the recording that Gordon posted.Beaverdam wrote:but Clams’s interpretation is analogous to my thinking

I saw Eric Carter hanging out in the crowd on Saturday and was thinking how nice it’d be to have Bloodkin open at HC again. Glad I was there to see them open in 2010 because there is a literal 0% chance of me ever seeing them live in my neck of the woods.Clams wrote:So Dead Confederate is told from the POV of an old civil war confederate statue that's about to be torn down. I thought JJ was awesome after only being minimally familiar with him going in. I really dug the almost John Hiatt-sounding (to me, anyhow) stuff early in the set.

Re: Jerry Joseph & the Stiff Boys
Been a fan of JJ for a little over a year now. Sugar Smacks is by far my favorite, but Dead Confederate has brought back some desturbing thoughts (probably to most, not me) that occured to me when people first started bitching about statues. For instance, why and who do we blame and since Clams wasn't around back then he's in the clear. But I will post it in his political thread.
I don't think the Dead Confederate is stupid but around here "hold my beer" is code for "watch this I'm about to do something really stupid", so everybody, hold my beer and turn to Clams political thread.

TOP DEFINITION
Hold my beer
Used to express an individual's boastful intent to outdo another person as an act of sport or competitiveness, expressed immediately after hearing about their achievement. Frequently used sarcastically or ironically.
Coworker 1: "Did you hear that Dan got fired for setting Mike's chair on fire?"
Coworker 2: "Hold my beer"

Re: Jerry Joseph & the Stiff Boys
OK, I was working on this anyway to post on OOTD, but hopefully some of you can help me figure out all the stuff I can't make out or got wrong. I've listened to the version from the 2020-02-15 JJ&SB show, as well as the 2018-08-26 JJ&JM show, which is the only other version I've found. Jerry has changed a fair bit of the lyrics in the year and a half between playing the song, moved some lines around, and I think he makes a few simple errors, so the following is a very bastardized amalgamation of both. Where lines are just flat out different, I'll likely follow the 2020 version for the site. As always, I appreciate any help you all can offer!Clams wrote:Thanks Smitty. Sugar Smacks
I spend my days reading Chinese science fiction.
Between the real world and "The Orphan Master's Son,"
I keep checking that there's one in the chamber, because
the real world keeps me throwing up and wishing it was done.
Everybody's got a reason to march,
but the fascists in the White House only laugh and pull another trigger.
When we're shopping for Walmart marble headstones,
it's time to reconsider that we might really need a gun.
We might really need a gun.
We might really need a gun.
Yeah, Mac, I gotta get back to my Sugar Smacks.
Me too, baby.
You should tell 'em about the time I threw you down the stairs.
It wasn't inappropriate touching, it was attempted murder.
No need to pick me out of a lineup, I admit that I was there.
And we're back.
And we're mad.
No longer theoretical conversations about governmental date rape;
it's just a different brand of duct tape
and a rubber ball, and a rubber ball, and a rubber ball full of rage.
I know it ?
Take me back, let me get back to my Sugar Smacks.
To my Sugar Smacks.
They said clean will make it better, but I miss being filthy,
and the cover it provides
from the fact I'm full of demons, and they're all screaming inside.
I don't think quantum physics will save us.
I've seen the Himalayan monks in Tengboche
watching digital porn on their ? phones
Black art premonition? and black art namasté.
Hey!
Black art namasté.
Here in Encinada there's a bathtub full of meth,
and there's a bathtub full of fentanyl.
Everybody wants a bath, but nobody's getting clean.
Everybody's alone.
"Me too," she said.
ISIS slavery and genital mutilation.
Now we're sitting here in a permanent cinderblock camp,
reading about sexual harassment on the executive level of a Portland advertising agency.
And the cartels are so happy about legal California weed
that for 10 fucking minutes they stopped the rape and slaughter of Juárez compañeros
and then they quit laughing and go back to stuffing 50 gallon drums full of bodies.
Help me, ?
And here in Freeman? I used to think it was far enough,
but now there's another killing outside of next to my beautiful gay friends and their vegan rye cheesecake.
The Kurdish father in the grand bazaar selling camel bone prayer beads
under the alias of a dead member of the New York Dolls
Come on ? and the Stiff Boys.
Can I get an amen for Johnny Thunder?
Can I get an amen for Dee Dee Ramone?
Can I get an amen for Joe Strummer?
My god, if they could only see us now.
I was hoping for a wall along the Mason-Dixon line,
? as my lefty Portland Oregon background ?
But my friend Patterson Hood asked the question: "Is that to keep us out, or to keep us in?"
I was wondering, I saw the Banksy girls on the Sharon Wall in Palestine
and I was wondering if the art was going to be any good
when they rebuild the Ark here on the old ? Plaza.
Cause I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, but if anybody's got any soul anymore
to trade it for a song.
If anybody's got any soul want to trade it for a song or a small prayer?
I can bring it back, I can bring it back.
Yeah, baby, I gotta get back on my Sugar Smacks.
?
Hey
Hey, hey, it's a fucked up world when you can't tell the pigs from the priests,
and you can't tell the good from the bad.
And everybody feeling alone.
There's very little out here these days has any soul.
And if I could only find my soul,
I'd sing to my sweet baby darling Jesus as he's riding his elephant
through the Apache rez.
And I sing to my wife and my children
so that they can know how much I love them.
And how sorry I am that I failed them
and let the world and nasty monsters shoot kids from ? to ?
Now there's a jam band doing another version of "The Weight,"
with mandolins and pretty girls with washboards.
Lakota Sioux medicine song sang by Rocky Mountain white kids.
And 30 different versions of the Grateful Dead book,
as opposed to 30 virgins being sacrificed for Flannery O'Connor,
Or the book of Murakami and Lester Bangs in song.
And I know, I know, I know, I know that if they play it right, they couldn't get it fucking wrong.
Tell me where my soul is, baby, show me my soul, so that I can, I can give it to you child
and you can keep it safe and you can keep it whole.
As I go searching, searching, searching, for my Sugar Smacks.
?
Back, back ,back!
?
Back, back, back!
?
Back, back, back, back, back, back!
Sugar Smacks.

Totally worshiped the album "April Nineteenth". Does he ever play Shooting Magnolia and Unprotected? I keep looking at shows online and can't find any.

Also an update on JJ's new record from Decor Records:
And some interesting nuggets here as well:Decor Records is proud to announce the signing of Jerry Joseph for his new record 'The Beautiful Madness' out this August 21st. Jerry will be joining the Delines on their Feb 2021 run as well as Drive-By Truckers on their next European run. The new album is produced by Patterson Hood and all the Truckers back Jerry up on the record with Jason Isbell even making an appearance for the first time in the studio with the Truckers for years. Here is the new video premiere on Americana UK for his new single "Days of Heaven" pre-orders and the new single here https://ffm.to/jjbma.ofp
‘The Beautiful Madness’ is not only produced by Patterson Hood but he also wrote the liner notes for Jerry’s first proper European release. It is Jerry’s unapologetic manifesto on “what in the hell is going on with the world written with concern only for shining a light on the truth. Sometimes he can hit you with a sledgehammer but usually it’s a slowburn, building with each line of vivid and raw lyrics as the truth of his stories are revealed.” The album was recorded at Matt Patton’s studio, Dial Back Sound, in Water Valley, Mississippi with the Stiff Boys aka all the Drive-By Truckers backing him up on the music for every song. It was also the first time the Truckers recorded with Jason Isbell since he left the band in 2007, Isbell playing slide guitar on the searing ballad ‘Dead Confederate’, which Hood says is “one of the best songs about prejudice and racial hatred that I have ever heard.

Probably because DBT is the backing band on the album, Patterson produced it, and Patterson wrote the album's liner notes.bovine knievel wrote:Why isn’t this post under the Other Bands section?

Re: Jerry Joseph & the Stiff Boys
I just listened to the live recording of "Sugar Smacks" for what seems like the hundredth time. That show was my first exposure to Jerry Joseph. (That's one of the great things for me about DBT shows--I often don't know the opener at all.) I don't know how I've missed him all these years. Where do I start?

I read on the FBook that he and Patterson went down to the Mr. Tear Gas franchise in Portland last night.

Went to preorder this today but $12.50 shipping for one record is outrageous, so I guess I'm gonna try to have my local record store order it for me, if they don't get it upon release.

^^^ Excellent interview here with JJ including a track by track discussion of the new record. Of note: the recording of Dead Confederate got Isbell and the Truckers together in the studio for the first time since JI left the band.
Also, I recommend checking out JJ's weekly online shows which he calls Jerry Joseph's Happy Book Live. You can find them on FB and Twitter. Sometimes he's solo and sometimes he's got a band (fully masked) and they play in someone's (not sure whose) basement. Other than the two shows I saw JJ open for DBT, it's really my first exposure to him. And I have to say, he's a pretty interesting guy and really intense. Also he covered Faith by George Michael, a guilty pleasure of mine, in one of the episodes.
