SOTW #144: Leaving Time/15 Days

Post by Smitty »

Sorry for the randomness, but I've been busy as shit on a project and I guess I ain't Clams.

;)

Leaving Time

The baby’s on the bedroom floor
Suitcases and clothes galore
Everyone’s just a little bit sore
When it comes to leaving time
Sister ain’t got much to say
The unexpected in the worst of spaces
Momma’s gonna be pissed all day
When it comes to leaving time
When it comes to leaving time
Do what you’re told without a fuss
Run the errands and load the bus
Don’t forget to give a damn about us
When it comes to leaving time
Add three hours to the old time zone
Faces on the Jetson’s telephone
Sing your songs and then bring it back home
In three weeks time
Hush little baby, have no fear
Only six more tours until the end of the year
Thank God, the package store sells more beer
Its nearly leaving time
I know everything’s gonna be ok
I know it’s harder when Daddy’s away
But I carry y’all with me in my heart, every night and day
And I ain’t never leaving
Just carrying us all to a whole bunch of places
Do what you’re told without a fuss
Run the errands and load the bus
Don’t forget to give a damn about us
When it comes to leaving time
Add three hours to the old time zone
Faces on the Jetson’s telephone
Sing your songs and then bring it back home

Fifteen Days (Leaving Time Again)
Fifteen days til I get back home
Lock the door, throw away that phone
Always lonely but I’m never alone
Hush little baby, close your eyes
Hurt’s the price for being alive
Hearing your sweet voice on the line
Don’t fill these empty arms of mine
Sun’s coming up though the bus windshield
Flock of birds across an open field
I’ll take a picture to show the kids
Just can’t capture how big the sky is
Fifteen days til I get back home
I’ll chase you around the bedroom some
I know it’s been weeks since I last passed through
But I’ll try to make it up to you
I’ll try to make it up to you
I do the best that I can do
We’ll stretch each day across the rim
Until it’s leaving time again

Whenever I see DBT in concert, I always think, "man, it must be cool to be a rock star!" When I run around the house playing air guitars with my two year old, I think that being a rock star dad would be really cool; however, these songs make me realize the harsh realities my rock star heroes face. Most nights in a given week, I get to see my son.

My dad was a firefighter and worked 24 hours shifts. Sometime he was gone on Thanksgiving or Christmas, and my family would go to the fire station for a holiday meal; however, Dad was never gone for weeks at a time. Even when my dad was at work, he was still accessible; he wasn't on the other side of the country. I work late sometimes, am taking classes, and occasionally have out of town meetings, but I can't imagine leaving my wife and son for weeks at a time. I realize that my time away takes its toll on my marriage and takes time from my son, and I can't imagine being gone significantly longer than I already am.

These songs make me really respect what DBT and other musicians do, and it brings the sacrifices which they make to the forefront of my mind. Thanks DBT, and thanks to the band members' families who allow them to do what they do--Long live rock!

As far as these songs themselves are concerned, I love them for the same reason I love the whole HLRD album; they show a very personal side of Mr. Hood! Every listener can relate to missing family!

These are my favorite songs from HLRITD, along with Disappear & 12:01. Does anybody know the chords for any of these songs? I have a horrible ear. Would ask in other section, but it doesn't get a lot of traffic.
Heading to HC Friday and Saturday - first timer!
