SOTW #104 - Strutter
Happy Monday all. Clamsy asked me to tackle this one last week and I gladly obliged. Many of you have been introduced to my fair better half who I have lovingly dubbed Strutter for her seeming inability to dress down and most of all for the fact that she sometimes...usually....always gets her way. I guess that's ok, she is a sweetheart. Anyway, this is one of my favorite covers they do, it's just fun and I love Neff''s solo after the 2nd verse. Another reason it is near and dear to my heart is that it happened to be the first DBT song my son (who at the time was about 6 and has a relatively mild form of autism) really latched on to. Out of the blue one day when it was on in the car, he just started belting out "Strutter!!!!!" right along with Cooley. He then started referring to DBT as Strutter and everything he thought was cool in a rock'n roll sort of way got that prefix applied as well. Shortly after we were buying school supplies and he informed us he needed a "Strutter bag". Unfortunately Craig doesn't sell book bags (but he should, hint, hint.) so we had to find a suitable alternative.
I know a thing or two about her
I know she'll only make you cry
She'll let you walk the street beside her
But when she wants she'll pass you by
Everybody says she's lookin' good
And the lady knows it's understood
Strutter
She wears her satins like a lady
She gets her way just like a child
You take her home and she says "Maybe, baby"
She takes you down and drives you wild
Everybody says she's lookin' good
And the lady knows it's understood
Strutter

I know she'll only make you cry
She'll let you walk the street beside her
But when she wants, she'll pass you by
Everybody says she's lookin' good
And the lady knows it's understood

Here's a nice one I believe shot by Mrs. Swamp....love Jay on the base. Wonder if he had any role in the idea to cover it?
Never going back to Buttholeville. (Good luck with that!)

I think this was from Halloween either 2009 or 2010? You got the line up right. Amazing how similar Jay and Neff look with face paint.

Re: SOTW #104 - Strutter
Great post GMU! Strutter is one of the few Kiss songs I really loved (Black Diamond is another).
Halloween 2010 in Richmond, they were dressed as cops (for UTBAC), so that musta been '09.
They keep playin' Strutter @ the shows I'm not at. Wish they would play it for me.
Your Strutter certainly wears that name well (although Spiderfingers would also work).

Why are they all dressed as Ace?
(Irrelevant note: given the choice I would also go with Ace.)

I was Peter Criss for Halloween in 1978. I was ten at the time.
Keep calm and have a cigar
Re: SOTW #104 - Strutter
Many years ago, probably close to two decades, the gang at Gautreau's dressed as KISS one Halloween. Had to be very close to the time period that Patterson was working there. Becky was usually our server but I have to believe that Patterson likely served us blackened catfish or barbecue shrimp or crawfish etouffee at least a time or two, as much as we ate there. Goes to show that genius may be that close to you at any given time.

What do you guys think was going on in the studio right before they cut the track?
If you don't run you rust

Because Ace was the best member of KISS.
I'm an unabashed fan of KISS. I love their schtick, and for years lined Gene's pockets with my hard earned cash. KISS's first record, which this came off of, is a monster. Its gritty and simple. Its the album I recommend to people who only know them from the whole Rock n' Roll All-Night single. No doubt as a teen, Cooley (and the rest of the band for that matter), couldn't have avoided the monstrosity that was KISS. It was in their wheelhouse, and the fact that they covered Strutter doesn't surprise me in the least.

I read an interview with Patterson a few years ago when he was asked about Kiss. He said the Ace Frehling solo album was his favorite Kiss or Kiss related project. He claimed to be a fan of Ace. By the way, just heard Ace' song New York groove in a new car commercial. I was a Kiss fan until Rock n Roll Over. And, saw Cooley do Strutter at Charlottesville in 2010.

Lots of bands have dressed up like Kiss but how many have all just been Ace. Love Ace. And I really love some Paul Stanley stage banter. Never gets old.

Check out my man Jay strumming the bass in the video above.
I think I remember Patterson saying that Ace was everyone's favorite. And I believe it was Halloween '09 as well.
By the time you drop them I'll be gone
And you'll be right where they fall the rest of your life

I am not a Kiss fan at all. However, I have always loved "Strutter" and I can't get enough of the DBT cover.

Could be the best Saturday Night Live type sketch ever. So funny. Waking up in middle of the night...."people...I gotta take a...pisssss...." I might dress up as Paul Stanley stage banter for Halloween next year. And take a little taste of alcohoohooolll.

my brother and his best friend (both in their 40's) went as Gene and Paul to a party recently. They bought very expensive costumes, and had someone do their makeup. I want photos but he refuses to share them. I've seen one though.
He was going to make a prop bass but ran out of time.
I've never taken a pissbreak during a DBT show but if I had it would have been during Dancing Ricky.

Halloween 2009, New Orleans - Voodoofest. Kiss was actually playing that festival. Best part - hopping on a golf cart with the band (just finished their makeup) to go to the stage, and seeing some of Kiss' road crew checking it out from their golf cart as we drove away. They had the most hilarious looks on their faces.

I was there! If I recall correctly, a recenty reunited Jane's Addiction played the opposite stage just prior to KISS headlining. Those guys still put on one hell of spectacle!
