One Of These Days

Post by RMD »

Has seemed to drop off the set lists I've seen of late. Used to be you'd get an Uncle Frank one night, and you could bet on a One Of These Days the next. Now it just seems to be UF every night.

A bunch of us were talking about this in Birmingham. I really miss it, probably in my top three Cooley songs.

I miss it, too. I was disappointed he didn't dust it off at any of the solo shows.

One Of These Days is one of Cooley's finest. I love the vocals, the guitar, the intensity....it's one of my favorites.

Zip, why you no like?

It's more indifference than dislike, though if I were to truly rank Cooley's songs, it would be in the bottom 5

Well you are your own man Zip. I'll give you that but One of These Days as bottom five? Crazy talk I tell ya, crazy talk.

For me it's all about this verse;

Once a country boy's seen
the way the steam rises off a man's insides on the sidewalk.
Tends to change the way he thinks, the way he sees everything
and he goes back to where he came from

I think the lyrics are good, it's the music that's sorta "meh"

It's all good. There's no accounting for some taste....especially mine.

BUT

I fucking love the guitar intro on that song, especially the original recorded version. It was one of the songs that made me finally pick up the guitar. Well, that and ZIP CITY.

I have to agree with this. I bought a used copy of Pizza Deliverance in 1999 after hearing a lot about DBT on the Postcard listserv. For whatever reason, the album just didn't click for me until I heard this verse on a second or third listen. That led me to go back and listen to ALL of the lyrics more closely, and I realized there was a lot more to these guys than I had originally expected. I loved the song so much that when I started the DBT setlist site, I didn't even consider any other songs for the name.

I'm not sure why it has dropped off the setlist in recent years, but the full band doesn't seem to pull it out very often anymore. I have to admit that I haven't paid attention; Rob Malone played the lead parts on the studio version, does Cooley play them live, or was it Jason and then Neff?

This is one that I like a lot live, but am not a huge fan of the studio version. Someone got their first wah-wah pedal the day they cut that I guess?

I actually like that guitar part with the wah wah, but your comment hit kind of close to home. The best shot I ever had as a musician was ruined because of an effect pedal. My band and I had a showcase show at a club in Chicago packed with management people, promoters and some label folks and our idiot guitar player decided to A) ditch practice the night before and B) buy a phase shifter the day of the show and played it on every song. End of opportunity, end of band's upward momentum. Sorry for the personal musings.

I realize that music and its appreciation or not is completely subjective but I don't see how anyone could be a fan of this band and not like this song.

It's a fucking Mike Cooley anthem for Pete's sake. Oh well different strokes.

The climax of the song ("One of these days, when my face looks like a road map, gonna find my way back home") is some of the most powerful music I've heard.

Probably my alltime favorite Cooley tune and I'm definitely bummed it's been dropped from the rotation. Although I was lucky enough to catch one the last one's they played at the Ogden in March of 2011!! I'd be curious to know why Cooley's stopped playing it entirely.

Was going to mention this as well, but you guys beat me to it. Have to crank it up and sing along whenever it gets to that part.

That's what I love about DBT, there's songs for everyone. I see tunes on here all the time that do nothing for me, such as World of Hurt, but that other people gush over.

I'd have to think long and hard to find another song lyric as descriptive as that one. It really is brilliant.

Also, the part where they play the live footage of One of These Days is one of my favorite parts of Secret to a Happy Ending.
