dbt track week 87 - Birmingham

Post by Clams »

No man should ever have to feel He don't belong in Birmingham.

Sorry to get heavy on y'all, but this one seems appropriate given that today is MLK Day.

Dr. King wrote his famous Letter From Birmingham Jail in April, 1963.
Read about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Letter_fro ... ngham_Jail
Here's the text of the actual letter: http://www.africa.upenn.edu/Articles_Ge ... ngham.html

Economics shut the furnace down
Bull Connor hosing children down
George Wallace stared them Yankee's down
In Birmingham

Take a left on the interstate
In the middle of this sultry state
I can't wait to see your face
In Birmingham

"I don't think it was worth it"
the last thing Stanley said to me
Twenty four years then a bullet in the chest and
I still see him in my sleep
Fifteen dollars in the purse He could not save
Her family didn't buy a stone to mark his grave
"Give me a call, if you need a place to stay in Birmingham"
Birmingham

Most of my family came from Birmingham
I can feel their presence on the street
Vulcan Park has seen it's share of troubled times
But the city won't admit defeat
Magic City's magic getting stronger
Dynamite Hill ain't on fire any longer
No man should ever have to feel He don't belong in Birmingham
Birmingham
If you don't run you rust

One of my favorite songs, about a city that's very dear to my heart
I've spent more time in Birmigham than any other "big city", and this song even sounds like the Magic City.
One of the last songs written for SRO.
E quindi uscimmo a riveder le stelle.

I've put this video on so many different threads, it might as well be here.
It starts off with a good shot of Lurleen & TC's guitar.
and that pussy Alec Baldwin blew that girl away, and speaking of pussy Steve got it all!

Will somebody in the know please explain the second verse? I suppose I get the gist but still sort of a puzzle. Who exactly is Stanley?
Never going back to Buttholeville. (Good luck with that!)

I came here looking for answers to the same questions. It looks like nobody answered GuitarMan in 2012. Maybe somebody will enlighten us six years later.
