dbt track # 76 - Panties in Your Purse

Week # 76 and we're finally rolling around to Panties in Your Purse...

As good an opening verse as any that the Truckers have put to vinyl.

Saw you standing in the hallway, red plastic cup, and one of those big long cigarettes
You asked me if I could play you some Dylan
I said "Dylan who?" you told me to kiss your ass
I apologized, but you could tell I didn't mean it by the way I rolled my eyes
and when you said it wasn't me it was you
somehow I knew you were gonna tell me why

Stuff was flying out of the window
falling and breaking on the pavement underneath
He's screaming at you, red faced and fuming
He'd come home early, parked his car way up the street
You had your stockings in your hand, panties in your purse
it was ten a.m. and all the neighbors heard
him calling you a whore and a tramp
you just stood there while your heels sank into the warm wet ground

He got a lawyer, you got a bottle
He got the children and you moved in with your mama
She fixes breakfast and lets you use her car
she don't care how late you call to tell her where you are
Ya'll still fight and she still nags you some
but somehow it's different now than when you were young
It's your own damn fault you been threw hell
for one reason or another, somehow she kinda blames herself

I had no idea that Panties in Her Purse was this weeks track and yet it's been playing in my head for two days. This song to me expresses Cooley's POV of life more than any other. Classic and always puts a smile on my face.

We need more country songs about the "walk of shame"

It was on my wish list as well this last week but didn't get to hear it.

Panties has always been one of my favorites, it is the perfect Cooley for me.

My favorite Cooley song. If I ever learn guitar, it's on my top 5 list of songs to learn. Here's another wish for a Winston-Salem sighting. Haven't seen it in a couple of years.

A song like no other. Songs like this & "Bob" really show Tom T.'s influence on the Cool man

Agreed. This is a remarkable song. It feels like it's much longer in the sense that nothing is left out, we can picture these scenes, these moments, the characters perfectly. I mean somebody like Harry Chapin or Billy Joel would take another 6 verses to try to tell this exact same story. And while it may be in plain fuckin' English the lyrics soar, not because it's arty "poetry" full of grand and obscure metaphors and biblical allusions, but because it's direct prose w/out being prosaic. Took me a long time to tumble to this song because it's on one of my least favorite DBT albums, but when i did it hit me like a ton of bricks and i've still got the bruises. :)

I remember driving a cab on the day shift on Saturday and Sunday. I would start my shift at 6:00 AM. Often I would have more than one lady during the first few hours of my shift who was doing what I refered to as the cab ride of shame. It always made me think about PIYP. What a great song.

I am by no means a good guitar player, but this one is fairly easy. I was picking it one day when my son walked by and said "hey, Panties in Your Purse"! I consider that one of the greatest accomplishments in my life...

I thought they played this in Omaha last spring? Must'a been one of the Denver shows I hit.

I'm lucky enough to have seen this twice, and it would be my vote for the most underrated Cooley song. Absolutely love this song.

Haven't you ever seen the show taxi cab confessions? It's all true man. Every word of it is true. Maybe I should start a thread about all my weird cab stories.

As one of the two pillars of Gangstabilly, Panties always makes me wonder why Patterson refers to GB as their weakest album or why when we do album rankings here GB winds up near the bottom. There's not much better than the uninterrupted run of Bubba-Late for Church-Panties-Why Henry Drinks-18 Wheels-SMQ-Buttholeville-Sandwiches for the Road. I know we're judging it against the rest of their face-melting catalogue, but that IMHO can hang with anything.

And great point, BTB, about other songwriters not being able to sum things up so eloquently. Spencer Hall, who writes everydayshouldbesaturday.com, had me laughing when he said if Billy Joel wrote a song about killing a homeless man with a hammer he'd call the song, "Killing a Homeless Man (With a Hammer)." It's just like Cooley said about shitty country-pop writing when talking to that epic fail interviewer, "there has to be a better way of saying it."

I think Patterson usually refers to the less than ideal conditions that it and Pizza Deliverance were recorded under. I may be in the minority but I still consider it my favorite Truckers record.

During tonight's Homecoming stream I realized (for the first time) that the chord sequence to this song is identical to Zip City

Yeah.... No.

Not the same melody (at all), but I'm pretty sure they're both Em/G/D/A....maybe PIYP is in a different key.

EDIT: After a bit of googling, looks like I'm a bit off. Oh well, it sure sounded like it the other night. Stupid beer....
