Re: American Band- 9/30/16

More listening, more opinions: These are Patterson's best songs in years. I'd put "Ever South," "Guns of Umpqua," "Darkened Flags" and "Baggage" up there with anything he's done. Great lyrics, great writing in general. It took me a few spins to fully appreciate some of these, but as everyone knows, ...

Re: American Band- 9/30/16

Also, can't believe people are complaining about the dearth of Patterson 'rockers' here. Is your copy of AB missing track #2??? That riff is just as monstrous as "Dead Drunk & Naked" or "Lookout Mountain."

Re: American Band- 9/30/16

As usual, yall are way too hard on GGB! I love that album, man. If there's one that's diminished in my eyes over time it's actually EO, which I loved at first, but find myself not going back to as much as I would have thought. Still digesting AB but I can say after just a few listens (sans lyric she...

Re: DBT to play at Democratic National Convention

Am I the only one a little surprised they're playing a gun control lobby benefit? I've read Cooley's gun piece, and I remember Patterson (many years ago) quoted as saying that DBT were Democrats, but the "gun-totin" type (which, in a very reductive sense--I don't 'tote' and I don't plan to vote--des...

Re: American Band- 9/30/16

And as long as we're getting political, my unsolicited $0.02: I am not eager, at the moment, to hear a song inspired by Ta-Nehisi Coates, who, despite being a gifted and powerful writer, was definitely complicit in discrediting and derailing the campaign of Bernie Sanders (who he's, err, voting for ...

The "keep your politics to yourself and play some fucking music!"'crowd are going to hate this record Good I'm not among this crowd. Pre-ordered. Love the cover art. Cautiously optimistic about the record. Cautious because nothing dates music like politics. But can't wait to hear it. This is one of the only bands left whose records I actually look forward to.

The Grateful Dead - Jerry, Bob singing Hunter, Barlow Eagles - Frey etc singing Souther, Browne, etc Sabbath - Ozzy (etc) singing Geezer I wish this happened more nowadays. Vanity is the only reason lyric-writing isn't outsourced to better writers. Vanity and punk rock. Songwriting as an art form ha...

Re: Sturgill Simpson Thread

I like the new record. Lotta respect for the 'Sturg. As some here have pointed out, he could have easily made a retread of Metamodern Sounds and could have coasted for a few years on that. Instead he made this fucked up hybrid of a Stax record, a Mickey Newbury record, and a classic Disney soundtrac...

Re: Sturgill Simpson Thread

The lyric change on "In Bloom" is a tad, err, ironic, no? I have no problem with it but I think his story about realizing the lyric was wrong after recording it is straight bullshit. He's telling me he didn't look up the lyrics before hitting record? What is the change you guys are talking about? I...

I love it, and though it may be fussier production-wise than the new Lucinda (Lanois glaze is all over it, th...

Re: What's Everyone Listening to?

Lucinda has been one of my favorite artists for the last 20 years, but I have to say this record is a goddam snooze fest. Been trying hard to like it all week but I can barely get through it. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Just going by first impressions here but I thought her last one was also relatively mellow...

Mine arrived yesterday. We shouldn't require an incentive to donate to such a worthy cause, but let me be the first to report that this is the best "Nuci's Bootleg" yet - band sounds incredible, camera work is flawless...just a great collection. Anyone on the fence about donating should do so. Beats...

Re: Overrated/Underrated Thread

So were criticizing people for "trying to be great" now? Jesus Christ I think a better way to put it is that some of these guys occasionally sound a touch too pleased with themselves, which only makes the more cliched / hackneyed lyrics stand out that much more. McCartney is my favorite Beatle, but...

Replace "Moreland" with "Isbell post-DBT" in this sentence and we're getting closer to something approaching a truthbomb here
