Greenville native and Drive-By Truckers drummer Brad Morgan has an excellent Gene Simmons story.
In the early ’90s, a teenage Morgan worked at the Greenville Memorial Auditorium, where his family ran the parking lot. The job came with a pass that Morgan would use to cruise around backstage and watch metal bands, including Metallica and Def Leppard, during sound-check.
Then, there was Kiss.
“We got done parking cars, and my father and grandfather are getting coffee, and Gene Simmons is like 10 feet away from all of us, with about 20 hot-ass girls all around him,” Morgan says. “One girl, apparently it was her birthday. (Simmons) picked her up by the butt and was just standing there holding her up like that. And I’m standing there with my father and grandfather, three generations of my family, and this is what’s going on. They didn’t know who he was.”
